The Weeknd & Swedish House Mafia Take Kanye West's Place as Coachella 2022 Headliners

After it was reported earlier this week that Kanye West would no longer perform at Coachella 2022, we now have confirmation The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia will be replacing him as headliners.

Both acts will perform as the Sunday night headliners. Their performances will take place on April 17 and 24.

“I’m so looking forward to this moment with Swedish House Mafia and the Weeknd finishing out the Sunday night slot this year,” Paul Tollett, president/CEO of Coachella promoter Goldenvoice, said in a statement to Variety. “Coachella has a special relationship with Abel [aka The Weeknd] and I’m so thankful to have this upcoming performance with these iconic artists all on the same stage.”

The Weeknd isn't new to headlining Coachella. He previously headlined the iconic festival back in 2018 - 2 years after the release of Starboy and 2 years before he dropped After Hours. As for Swedish House Mafia, the group last performed in the desert in 2012. Previously, their role at Coachella 2022 was to "close out the ceremony."

Now, it appears the EDM group and The Weeknd will be closing the festival together. SHM collaborated with The Weeknd on the track “Moth to a Flame” last year. The group then remixed the singer’s Dawn FM track “Sacrifice.”

At the time of writing, Kanye West's representatives have not offered a reason for the artist's withdrawal from Coachella. The rapper previously stated he would cancel his set if fellow headliner Billie Eilish did not apologize to Travis Scott. This statement came after Eilish paused a show to help a fan, not long after the Astroworld tragedy. The moment at Eilish's concert went viral, and West believed Eilish had insulted Scott - whom West intended to bring out at Coachella. Eilish said she “literally never said a thing about Travis” and “was just helping a fan.”

In other The Weeknd and Swedish House Mafia news: the former artist is prepping to embark on a summer tour to support Dawn FM, while the latter group is set to release their debut album, Paradise Again, on April 15.
