Caroline Polachek Shares New Aria Created for Kurt Cobain Inspired Opera
You read that title correctly: there is a Kurt Cobain-inspired opera playing right now. Caroline Polachek has shared an aria that she wrote for Oliver Leith’s upcoming opera Last Days, an adaptation of Gus Van Sant’s 2005 film dramatizing the end of Kurt Cobain’s life.
While the opera is inspired by Cobain, it is not actually about the Nirvana frontman. The show follows the final hours of a grunge musician named Blake (played by Agathe Rouselle), whose end is eerily similar to Cobain's. The opera has become one of the hottest in Britain this fall, having long sold out a four-night run. Last Days runs at London’s Royal Opera House through tomorrow, October 11.
The contribution from Polachek and PC Music producer Danny L Harle is titled “Non Voglio Mai Vedere il Sole Tramontare,” Italian for “I Never Want to See the Sun Go Down.” The dramatic ballad – complete with high soprano notes and emotional violin parts – runs almost five minutes long. When translated from Italian, the lyrics in the first verse state, "Oh, my life! / All my life! / I've looked for you / I've been looking for your touch / Like a sunrise / Like a volcano / Have mercy on me / Have mercy on me / I never want to see the sunset."
Since 2019’s Pang, Polachek has released the singles “Bunny Is a Rider” and “Billions.” She’s also joined Charli XCX for “New Shapes,” made a guest appearance on Murkage Dave’s “Awful Things,” and covered Nancy Sinatra’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” for the Minions sequel soundtrack.
