Music Industry Calls for 'Black Out Tuesday' After George Floyd's Death
On Tuesday, June 2, the music industry will participate in "Black Out Tuesday" in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
Capitol Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music, Universal Music Group, as well as dozens of artists and companies will take “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community” as “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change.”
"As gatekeepers of the culture, it's our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during loss," reads the statement, which is being circulated under the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused.
Some of the first to announce their participation include Apple Music's Ebro Darden, former Hot 97 music programming director Karlie Hustle, British record label Dirty Hit, and independent distributor EMPIRE.
Black Out Tuesday will take place just 8 days after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on the neck of Floyd for more than eight minutes. After nationwide protests, Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd. At the time of writing, the three officers standing by have not been charged.
