Tupac Shakur Estate Unveils 'Wake Me When I’m Free' Exhibit
The estate of Tupac Shakur - also known as 2Pac - has announced a new exhibition exploring the late rapper’s life and legacy. Titled Wake Me When I'm Free, the event will open in Los Angeles at the Canvas at L.A. Live on January 21 before eventually travelling to other cities.
A press release describes Wake Me When I’m Free as “part museum, part art installation, part sensory experience.” It will highlight the music and poetry of Shakur with a special focus on the deeper meaning of his activism and art.
The 20,000-square-foot installation will reflect the space of a contemporary art museum and incorporate never-before-seen artifacts relating to the late rapper’s career and legacy. It will also describe the life of Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur, who was a member of the Black Panthers. Her story has a significant presence in the exhibition's narrative.
Jeremy Hodges, the creative director of the exhibit, has previously worked with the likes of Drake and Jay-Z and is the founder of the firm Project Art Collective. Hodges developed Wake Me When I’m Free alongside Nwaka Onwusa, the chief curator and VP of Curatorial Affairs at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Tupac Shakur was inducted into the esteemed Rock Hall back in 2017.

“It is a privilege to be a part of such a monumental project,” Jeremy Hodges shared in a statement. “Tupac Shakur was my Malcolm; he was my Martin, and to build an experience that honors such a prolific man cannot be summed up in words.”
Hodges added: "We wanted to create a memorable experience that will inspire you to be better than when you walked in, all while leaving you with the knowledge that he was a true revolutionary spirit."
"Tupac Shakur was without a doubt one of the most important artists of his generation, transforming culture through his music and ideas,” said Steve Berman, executive producer of the exhibit and vice chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records. "Wake Me When I’m Free honors Tupac’s extraordinary contributions, and I know I speak for the entire Interscope and Universal Music Group family that we are so proud to be able to collaborate with our partners to bring this incredible exhibit to life.”
It is yet to be announced which other cities and when Wake Me When I'm Free will travel to. In the meantime, a pre-sale for tickets is currently happening now. Tickets for the event will go on sale to the general public on November 12.
