NEWURBANJAZZ IS THE PEOPLE’S MUSIC What is NewUrbanJazz with Bob Baldwin (Established 2008) NewUrbanJazz is a global fusion of Contemporary Jazz, blending Brazilian influences, urban grooves, and international sounds—while honoring the original art form of jazz through both instrumental and vocal expression. As of November 2024, the 2-hour syndicated program, NewUrbanJazz Lounge, airs on 55 stations worldwide, broadcasting Friday through Sunday evenings at 8:00 PM EST. NewUrbanJazz continues to expand its reach and influence, particularly throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Led by Bob Baldwin, NewUrbanJazz Lounge delivers a weekly journey through the full spectrum of jazz—connecting cultures, generations, and styles from around the world. ⸻ Radio Background of Bob Baldwin (Founder) Bob Baldwin began his radio career in 1980 as an intern under the legendary Frankie Crocker, afternoon drive personality at WBLS in New York—then the #1 station in the country—owned by former Tuskegee Airman Percy Sutton of Inner City Broadcasting. In 1985, Baldwin stepped away from radio to pursue his recording career, but soon returned as a newswriter at 1010 WINS in New York City. During that time, he connected with Pat Prescott (later of The Wave in Los Angeles), who would go on to secure a morning position at CD101.9 (WQCD) in 1988. Baldwin also contributed coverage of Jesse Jackson’s 1984 presidential campaign for WVIP in Mt. Kisco, NY. A New York native, Baldwin reignited his passion for broadcasting after relocating to Atlanta in the late 1990s. From 1998 to 2001, he worked with WCLK (Clark Atlanta University), one of the nation’s premier 24-hour jazz stations. Following a period of international touring, Baldwin resumed his radio work in Jacksonville, Florida, with Cherry Communications as Music Director and Consultant. In 2005, he launched Bermuda’s first smooth jazz station, KJAZ, under Trott Communications, serving until 2007. He then returned to Atlanta as Music Director at WCLK before joining WJZZ (Radio One) later that year. It was during this time that Baldwin began refining the format that would become known as NewUrbanJazz.
