Bruce Springsteen Announces New Covers Album 'Only the Strong Survive' & Shares Frank Wilson Cover

The Boss has announced an album of soul music covers called Only the Strong Survive. Springsteen's new project is set for release on November 11 via Columbia Records.

On Only the Strong Survive, Springsteen covers 15 tracks primarily from the 60s and 70s. With a title taken from Jerry Butler’s 1969 song “Only The Strong Survive,” the project includes covers like “I Wish It Would Rain” by the Temptations, “Any Other Way” by Jackie Shane, Jimmy Ruffin's “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” and more. The album was recorded with the E Street Horns, producer Ron Aniello, and backing vocalists Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Dennis Collins, and Fonzi Thornton. Sam Moore also contributed guest vocals for the record.

In a statement, Springsteen explained: "I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the ’60s and ’70s? I’ve taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I’ve tried to do justice to them all—and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it."

With the news of the covers album, Springsteen has shared a Thom Zimny–directed music video for his cover of Frank Wilson’s “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do).” The visual sees Springsteen perform for a crowd on a grand stage, with a full band behind him.

Only the Strong Survive will be the follow-up to Bruce Springsteen’s 2020 album Letter to You, and his first covers album since 2006’s We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions.

In related news, Bruce Springsteen & The Street Band are heading out on tour next year that will find the band traveling to North American and European cities from February to July.
