Center Stage on Live365: UHyped Radio
Center Stage on Live365 this week is UHyped Radio, dedicated to bringing listeners something new and playing the music artists make, regardless of genre! We spoke with station manager Kevin Askew about their history with radio, their station's programming, and we got some music recommendations. Check out the interview below!
What made you get started in radio?
My start was born out of a need to have the music of the "unsigned," "unknown," "underground," and "unheard of" artists reach new ears and to bring listeners something new to hear.
What brought you to Live365?
I'm a member of ASCAP (songwriting/publishing) and wanted to make sure that the royalties are paid on the music I play on my station...and I didn't have to manage the royalty tracking and payments.
What's your favorite part about running your own radio station?
Getting to play my own music in the playlist without the listener knowing that it is my music they are listening to. Also, listening to music that I would never come across in my daily life.
Tell us about your station's programming. What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
My station's Monday-Saturday programming is music 24 hours a day in six basic genres: dance, dancehall/reggae, electronic, hip-hop/rap, jazz, R&B. Each genre plays for two hours at a time, playing twice per day. On Sundays (12am-11:59pm PT), we randomly play all music from the previously mentioned genres as well as some additional genres, like alternative, pop, rock, country, and metal. Find more specific schedule info on our website.
Name one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion.
I can't answer this because there are way too many unknown artists that I feel are underrated.
What's your favorite music memory/moment?
I was friends with 2 live crew members and their DJ Mr. Mixx was friends with DJ Jazzy Jeff. I got to see both of them practice before a concert some time in the late 1980s.
