Janet Jackson Super Bowl Documentary 'Malfunction' Coming to FX and Hulu
Janet Jackson has not one, but two documentaries about her career set to be released in the near future. The first is a focus on her life titled JANET that will be released next year in January. The second is a deep dive into the infamous wardrobe malfunction caused by Justin Timberlake during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.
The latter documentary will be titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson and will be available to watch on FX and Hulu November 19 at 10 p.m. ET. The New York Times Presents film is directed by Jodi Grimes (The Jacksons: a Family Dynasty) and will focus on the "cloth rip heard round the world" as Billboard puts it - otherwise known as the 9/16th of a second when Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s breast on national television.
The series that helped spark the #FreeBritney movement with February's Emmy-nominated Framing Britney Spears documentary promised in a release Malfunction will contain rare footage and interviews with music industry bigwigs and members of the Jackson family, as well as several people who were in the broadcast booth that night in Houston.
Executives from the NFL and MTV, who produced that year's halftime show, will walk through the events of that night which eventually came to be known as "Nipple-gate." The infamous wardrobe malfunction led to years of complaints, fines, and serious career implications for Jackson while Timberlake seemingly got off the hook. While Jackson was uninvited from the following week's Grammy Awards and has never been invited back to the Super Bowl, Timberlake appeared at the 2004 Grammys - where he was allowed to issue a public apology - and did another performance at the Super Bowl in 2018.
“I've seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond,” Timberlake said at the time. “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism. I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed.”
Following the debut of Framing Britney Spears, Timberlake issued another public apology to both his ex Spears and Jackson for the way he treated them. After Timberlake was portrayed as being callous towards Britney Spears in the documentary, a number of outlets called for Justin to be reprimanded for the apparent pass he got from the music industry.
It does not appear Jackson or Timberlake have reacted to the documentary announcement yet. However, Jackson recently promoted the trailer for JANET on social media. "This is my story, told by me, not through someone else's eyes," she says in the preview.
