Watch Red Hot Chili Peppers' Hollywood Walk of Fame Ceremony
After four decades in the music biz, Red Hot Chili Peppers have received a much-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Yesterday (March 31), the band participated in the customary Walk of Fame ceremony celebrating their new star on Hollywood Boulevard. Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, and John Frusciante were all in attendance to receive the 2,717th star on the iconic walkway.
The event was livestreamed via YouTube and each band member got a chance to talk to the audience. First up was Frusciante who took time to recall when he first move to Hollywood as a teenager in 1987 before thanking "everybody in the world who our music means something to."
Flea then reminisced on his longstanding connection to Hollywood Boulevard, saying he “panhandled” on the street as a young person and played trumpet at the nearby University of Southern California.
“I know this street inside out, and this street knows me,” he said. “And whenever we’ve traveled around the world, this street has always been a part of me. I’m really grateful that now we can be a part of it.”
Following that, Smith took to the podium to acknowledge the “amazing turnout” for the ceremony and gave shout outs to past members of the band, including a beloved friend who recently passed away.
“I have to give a shout out to my brother Taylor Hawkins,” he continued, “who I love and we’ll all miss so much.” He added, “He’s flying around […] He would laugh and make a nice smart-ass comment about this whole thing, and I love him.”
Finally, Kiedis said: “To me, this is not a story of individuals...Something happens when we come together, which is much greater than the individual parts. The sum total of our parts is that we were able to find something that we love doing and communicate with the entire world. We started off playing dive bars up and down this street and making a handful of people dance and come to life.”
He continued, “We stuck together as a team and as a band, and now we can make everybody dance and feel joy.”
As for other speakers, George Clinton and Woody Harrelson also contributed speeches about Red Hot Chili Peppers at the ceremony.
In other Red Hot Chili Pepper news, the band have announced plans for an extensive international stadium tour in the summertime. Additionally, their twelfth studio album Unlimited Love was just released.
