Center Stage on Live365: Memory Lane (UK) Radio
Center Stage on Live365 this week is Memory Lane (UK) Radio - "The station for people who refuse to grow up!" We spoke with station manager Anthony 'Nino' Firetto about their history with radio, their station's programming, and we got some music recommendations. Check out the interview below!
What made you get started in radio?
I started as a club DJ in 1974, working the circuit in the UK and Europe and I won a guest spot on 208 Radio Luxembourg.
What brought you to Live365?
Browsing the internet, I came across Live365 and began listening to other stations and thought it was the ideal platform for us.
What's your favorite part about running your own radio station?
Sharing...radio is the theatre of the mind and I get to share music and laughter with others.
Tell us about your station's programming. What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
Memory Lane UK features 6 decades of top 40 hits. What makes us stand out is that we have a different kind of mix: music, comedy and archive news. All of which bring to the listener thought-provoking memories. We will put you in a different time and happy place.
Name one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion.
What's your favorite music memory/moment?
In an interview and unrehearsed I sang "My Girl" with Smokey Robinson.
Please list your top 5 or 10 songs, with a brief reason why each song made your list.
-
"Yesterday Once More" - Carpenters
I guess this would be the radio station's theme song because all of the lyrics are basically what we are all about. The opening line is
"When I was young I'd listen to the radio waiting for my favourite songs." -
"Parklife" - Blur
This is sooo Britpop: strong accents and painting the quintessential British mood/scene. -
"(Remember The Days Of The) Old Schoolyard" - Cat Stevens
...probably for the same thought-provoking reason I gave for the Carpenters. -
"Lazy Sunday" - Small Faces
I just love this classic track. Very British, and it even ends with the Sunday church bells ringing in the distance. -
"What Have I Done To Deserve This?" - Dusty Springfield and Pet Shop Boys
Two generations of music coming together. Dusty had the amazing voice and it compliments the Pet Shop Boys production and sound.
Also in the running...anything by Paul Simon, The Lightning Seeds, and Marvin Gaye.
