Center Stage on Live365: Condo Jamz Radio
Center Stage on Live365 this week is Condo Jamz Radio - "Redefining Quality Hip Hop/R&B." We spoke with station manager Keenan Copening about their history with radio, their station's programming, and we got some music recommendations. Check out the interview below!
What made you get started in radio?
I always had a passion for quality music since I was a kid and used to record mix compilations off of the radio onto cassette tapes back in the early 90s, which is considered by some to be one of the golden ages for music.
What brought you to Live365?
I have a uncle who is currently a DJ who asked me about the possibility of starting my own station and it was one of those things where I would say "it sounds good," but then nothing would happen. The idea of creating one rekindled and now I have been broadcasting for nearly 4 years, which is really hard work and interesting at the same time.
What's your favorite part about running your own radio station?
I get to play whatever I want and upload new and throwback content! Also, I love finding album art for the track metadata, which is something I noticed a lot of other stations refuse to capitalize on. It might seem weird to some, but I have an obsessive-compulsive disorder and like to maintain a uniform look for my platform.
Tell us about your station's programming. What can listeners expect when they tune in to your station?
Condo Jamz Radio is a commercial internet radio station in Wilmington, Delaware that's licensed on the Live365 network, broadcasting the best in urban adult contemporary, classic soul, hip hop, and rarities from some of your favorite artists. You can expect quality overall which is something some stations lack nowadays. Also, we are an affiliate of the Sheryl Underwood Radio morning podcast.
Name one artist that you play on your station that is underrated in your opinion.
Recording artist and Philadelphia's own Eric Roberson has a new single out titled "Lessons" from his latest album Hear From Here.
What's your favorite music memory/moment?
There are a lot of them and too many to name, but I will give you one. I believe it was at the 2003 BET Awards where legendary comedienne and Queen of Comedy Mo'Nique hosted. Michael Jackson was doing his dance routine on the stage only to be surprised by "The Godfather of Soul" James Brown who walks out and the two faced off in a dance contest. That was an incredible moment in history that can never ever be duplicated.
Please list your top 5 or 10 songs, with a brief reason why each song made your list.
All of these have a unique sound:
-
"A Long Walk" - Jill Scott
-
"Hypnotize (feat. Pam Long)" - The Notorious B.I.G.
-
"Frontin' (feat. Jay-Z)" - Pharrell
In addition to a unique sound, this was my introduction to The Neptunes Sound. -
"All That I Can Say" - Mary J. Blige
-
"The Sweetest Thing (feat. Lauryn Hill)" - Refugee Camp All Stars
This was also my introduction to neo soul.
