The Weeknd to Develop & Star in New HBO Series with 'Euphoria' Creator
The Weeknd is out to create an HBO cult classic.
The After Hours musician is teaming up with Reza Fahim and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson for a new HBO show titled The Idol, Variety first reported. The Weeknd will co-write, executive produce, and act in the series. The story involves a female pop star who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner - who is also the leader of a secret cult.

Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson will also executive produce and be credited as creators. Other executive producers include Joseph Epstein and Mary Laws (who will also write while Epstein will serve as showrunner), Ashley Levinson and Kevin Turen (Little Lamb Productions), Aaron L. Gilbert, Wassim "SAL" Slaiby, and La Mar C. Taylor.
This is not the first time the Weeknd has dipped his toes into the world of film and TV. He wrote and starred in an episode of the animated series American Dad on TBS in 2020. He also played a past version of himself in the critically-acclaimed film Uncut Gems opposite Adam Sandler.
Sam Levinson created the hit teen drama series Euphoria, which debuted on HBO in 2019. He is also behind the films Malcolm & Marie and Assassination Nation. Euphoria earned multiple Emmy nominations for its first season, including a win for Best Actress in a drama (Zendaya). A second season is currently in production, and two one-hour specials dropped back in December and January.
